Josephine Bonitz is a young German soprano with Swiss roots. Currently transitioning from full lyric into jugendlich-dramatisch repertoire, she will make her debut as Helmwige in Wagner's Die Walküre in 2026, as part of the Dramatic Voices Program in Berlin.
Her artistic home is the Romantic repertoire, yet she moves with joy beyond it, from the title role of Dido in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas to Songs by Korngold, Schönberg and Messiaen.
Her artistry has been recognized with prizes at numerous international competitions, among them the Bizet Special Prize for Excellent Musicianship, the Gold Prize at the Georges Bizet International Music Competition (Opera/Musical), 2nd Prize at the Amigdala International Music Competition, the Silver Prize at the Ravel Award, and 2nd Prize at Classical Music Stars. She currently studies with vocal pedagogue Franziska Hirzel and has furthered her artistry in masterclasses with Jennifer Larmore, Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, Ingeborg Danz, and Tobias Krampen.
Raised in an artistic family, Josephine has been classically trained and holds degrees in Singing (Switzerland) and Cultural Management from the University of Basel. Her early stage experience includes the world premiere of Klaus Lang's Der Rote Spiegel in Bonn under conductor Sybille Wagner, The Wizard of Oz at Schauspielhaus Basel under director Niklaus Helbling, and Aida, Carmen, Wozzeck, and Manon at Opernhaus Basel under directors Calixto Bieito and Elmar Goerden.
